Tiaina Baul "Junior" Seau Jr. was born on 19 January 1969 in San Diego, California, and starred at Oceanside High School before playing college football at USC, earning Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Year honours in 1989. The San Diego Chargers selected Seau fifth overall in the 1990 NFL Draft, and he developed into the emotional and physical heart of the franchise for 13 seasons, becoming one of the most beloved and charismatic figures in the city's sporting history, known for his fist-pumping intensity and community involvement. Seau earned 12 consecutive Pro Bowl selections and six first-team All-Pro honours, helping the Chargers reach Super Bowl XXIX, and later played for the Miami Dolphins and New England Patriots, reaching a second Super Bowl with New England following the 2007 season. Seau retired in 2010 and was found dead at his Oceanside home on 2 May 2012, at age 43, in a death ruled a suicide. A posthumous examination of his brain tissue found evidence of chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a discovery that contributed significantly to the NFL's broader reckoning with football-related brain injury. Seau was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2015 and named to the NFL's 100th Anniversary All-Time Team.
