Born on 11 June 1992 in Saint-Amand-Montrond, France, Julian Alaphilippe began his career in cyclo-cross, finishing runner-up at the 2010 Junior World Championships before transitioning fully to the road. He turned professional with Omega Pharma-Quick-Step in 2014 and remained with the team through its various sponsor iterations for a decade. Alaphilippe's breakthrough season came in 2018, when he won his first Flèche Wallonne and his first Tour de France stages, wearing the polka dot mountains jersey to Paris. His finest year followed in 2019, when he won Strade Bianche on debut, claimed his sole Monument victory at Milan-San Remo with a decisive attack on the Poggio, and held the Tour de France's yellow jersey for 14 days. His crowning achievement came at the 2020 World Road Race Championships in Imola, where a perfectly timed solo attack carried him to victory, and he defended the title the following year in Belgium with another solo win — becoming the only Frenchman in history to win two road world titles.
