Julia Görges is a German former tennis player who reached a career-high ranking of World No. 9 and a Wimbledon semifinal in 2018, becoming one of the WTA Tour's most prolific servers of her generation.
Julia Görges led the entire WTA Tour in aces in 2018, the year she reached the Wimbledon semifinals, and her career aces total since 2008 trailed only Serena Williams and Karolína Plíšková — making her one of the most formidable servers women's tennis has produced. She first broke into the WTA Tour's top 100 in June 2008, and won her first WTA singles title on the clay of Bad Gastein, Austria, in 2010. Görges enjoyed a signature moment on home soil in 2011, becoming just the second German woman after Anke Huber to win the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart, defeating World No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki in the final as a 32nd-ranked player, then repeating the feat against Wozniacki weeks later in Madrid. She added further titles including the Kremlin Cup in Moscow, before capturing the biggest title of her career at the season-ending 2017 WTA Elite Trophy in Zhuhai. Görges carried that momentum into a career-best 2018 season, winning a title in Auckland to open the year and reaching the semifinals of Wimbledon, where she was renowned throughout her career for one of the most powerful serves on tour — trailing only Serena Williams and Karolína Plíšková in career aces since 2008 and leading the WTA Tour in aces in 2018. That season she reached her career-high ranking of World No. 9. She retired in October 2020 with seven WTA singles titles and five doubles titles, having also reached the Fed Cup final with Germany in 2014.
