Juan Francisco Estrada Romero was born on 14 April 1990 in Puerto Peñasco, Sonora, Mexico, and lost both of his parents at just seven years old, being raised afterward by his aunt. He began boxing at nine, and at 15 moved to Hermosillo, Sonora, to focus more intensively on his development, compiling an amateur record of 94 wins against just four losses and winning four national championships. Estrada turned professional at 18 in 2008, fighting under the nickname "El Gallo" (The Rooster), and developed into one of the most technically complete and fan-friendly boxers of his generation despite standing just 5 feet 4 inches tall. He won his first world titles at flyweight between 2012 and 2015, unifying the WBA and WBO belts. Estrada moved up to super flyweight and engaged in a celebrated trilogy of fights against Nicaragua's Román "Chocolatito" González beginning in 2012, a rivalry regarded as one of the finest in modern lower-weight boxing, with Estrada eventually winning the decisive third meeting.
