First man to break 3:50 for the mile, 1976 Olympic champion.

Born on 12 January 1952 in Papakura, New Zealand, John Walker first drew international attention at the 1974 Commonwealth Games in Christchurch, finishing runner-up to Tanzania's Filbert Bayi in a world-record 1500m. He avenged that defeat the following year in Helsinki. Walker's career-defining moment arrived on 12 August 1975 in Gothenburg, Sweden, where he broke Bayi's mile world record by more than 1.5 seconds, clocking 3:49.4 to become the first person in history to run a mile in under 3:50 — a full 10 seconds faster than Roger Bannister's historic sub-four-minute mile 21 years earlier. Peter Snell later argued the run was a greater achievement than Bannister's. In 1976, Walker won Olympic 1500m gold at the Montreal Games, the third New Zealander to do so after Jack Lovelock and Peter Snell, and set a world 2000m record in Oslo the same year. His career, remarkable for its longevity, spanned 17 years and three world records. Walker became the first athlete to run 100 sub-four-minute miles, a record that stood until American rival Steve Scott's own pursuit of the milestone, and he ultimately finished with 135 sub-four-minute miles over his career. He was knighted for his services to athletics and named New Zealand's Sports Champion of the 20th Century alongside Snell.
