Joel Embiid played a single, injury-curtailed season at Kansas before being drafted third overall in 2014.

Joel Hans Embiid was born in Yaounde, Cameroon in 1994 and did not play organised basketball until he was 16. He was discovered by Luc Mbah a Moute and developed rapidly enough to earn a Kansas scholarship within two years. His single Kansas season produced 11.2 points and 8.1 rebounds per game — numbers that understated his impact as a defensive force and shot-blocking presence. He won the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year award. He was named to the All-Big 12 First Team. His combination of shot-blocking ability, mobility and rapidly developing offensive touch made scouts project him as a generational center talent. He was widely projected as the number one overall pick before a stress fracture in his right foot required surgery. Philadelphia 76ers selected him third overall in the 2014 NBA Draft. His Kansas season is studied in the context of international player development — a player who learned the game at 16 was within two years performing at All-Conference level and within five years winning the NBA MVP award. His single Kansas year is the fastest development arc from basketball beginner to elite professional in the sport's history.
