Ilia Topuria was born on 21 January 1997 in Halle, Germany, to Georgian parents who had fled conflict in Abkhazia, and moved with his family to Georgia as a young child, where he began training in Greco-Roman wrestling alongside his brother, Aleksandre. Following the 2008 Russo-Georgian War, the family relocated again when Ilia was 15, settling in Alicante, Spain. Topuria discovered Brazilian jiu-jitsu at Alicante's Climent Club, and he and his brother became the first Georgians ever to earn black belts in the discipline in 2018, before Ilia turned to professional mixed martial arts, remaining undefeated throughout his entire career. Topuria, nicknamed "El Matador," won the UFC Featherweight Championship in 2024, knocking out Alexander Volkanovski to become the first fighter from both Georgia and Spain to win a UFC title, having been granted Spanish citizenship that same year in recognition of his achievements. Topuria vacated the featherweight title to move up and win the UFC Lightweight Championship, becoming the first UFC two-division champion to do so while maintaining a perfect undefeated record, and continues to compete as one of the most feared finishers in the sport, representing both his Georgian heritage and adopted Spanish home.
