Henrikh Mkhitaryan was born on 21 January 1989 in Yerevan, then part of the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic, to Hamlet Mkhitaryan, a professional footballer who had starred for Ararat Yerevan before moving the family to France to continue his playing career in the lower divisions. Henrikh spent part of his childhood in France as a result, immersed in football from birth through his father's career. Tragedy struck in May 1996, when Hamlet Mkhitaryan died suddenly at just 33 years old, prompting the family to return to Armenia, where seven-year-old Henrikh — affectionately known as "Geno" — began his own football journey at Pyunik's academy, determined to follow in his late father's footsteps. He won four Armenian Premier League titles with Pyunik before moving to Ukraine, first with Metalurh Donetsk and then Shakhtar Donetsk. Mkhitaryan's performances in Ukraine earned him a move to Borussia Dortmund in 2013, where his creativity and goal-scoring from midfield made him one of the Bundesliga's most productive players. He went on to play for Manchester United, Arsenal, Roma, and Inter Milan, becoming renowned for his consistent end product across multiple top European leagues. Mkhitaryan is Armenia's all-time leading goalscorer and the first Armenian player to establish himself at the top level of European football, representing his country from 2007 to 2021 and remaining a source of immense national pride throughout a career built on the foundation his footballing father provided before his untimely death.
