Henrik Zetterberg was born in Njurunda, Sweden in 1980. Detroit Red Wings selected him 210th overall in the 1999 NHL Draft — in the seventh round, another extraordinary value pick from the Red Wings' scouting department. His career produced 337 goals and 623 assists for 960 career points — all spent with Detroit. He won three Stanley Cup championships (2002, 2008, 2009). He won the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP in 2008 — the championship that ended the 2002 dynasty and began a second Detroit run. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2024. He served as Detroit's captain from 2012 until his retirement in 2018. A chronic back condition — diagnosed as a degenerative disc disease — forced his early retirement at age 37. His combination of exceptional two-way play, leadership and longevity for a single franchise made him the spiritual successor to Steve Yzerman as the Red Wings' defining player. His partnership with Pavel Datsyuk — the two greatest two-way forwards of his era on the same team — gave Detroit one of the most defensively elite forward pairs in hockey history.
