Gretel Bueta (née Tippett) was born on 3 July 1993 on the Gold Coast, Queensland, into a sporting family — her brothers Kurt and Joel both played AFL. She began as a basketballer, representing Australia at three junior basketball World Championships and playing for the Australian Institute of Sport and Logan Thunder in the WNBL, where she was named 2011 Rookie of the Year before glandular fever cut her season short. Bueta switched to netball in March 2012 and was fast-tracked into elite competition, signing as a replacement player for the Queensland Firebirds in 2013 and being selected for that year's World Youth Cup in Glasgow. After a season with the NSW Swifts she returned to the Firebirds and made her Australian Diamonds debut in October 2015. She became one of the country's most distinctive attacking players, known for an unorthodox 'lay-up' shooting style, and was named to the Super Netball Team of the Year in 2018, 2019 and 2022. That last year she won the Liz Ellis Diamond — Australian netball's most prestigious individual award — and helped the Diamonds win gold at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games, scoring 253 goals at 96 per cent accuracy across the tournament. Bueta has balanced her career with motherhood, taking breaks from the sport around the births of her three children, Bobby, Toby and Lacy, before returning each time to the Firebirds.
