Gerhard Berger

Austrian Formula 1 racing driver who competed from 1984-1997, winning 10 Grand Prix races and achieving 48 podium finishes during his distinguished career.

Gerhard Berger was born on 27 August 1959 in Wörgl, Tyrol, Austria, and made his Formula One debut with ATS in 1984, developing into one of the most respected and popular drivers of his era across 14 seasons and 210 Grand Prix entries, a total that ranked among the highest in the sport's history at the time of his retirement. Berger drove for Arrows, Benetton, Ferrari, and McLaren, winning ten Grand Prix and finishing third in the World Championship on two occasions, in 1988 and 1994, while driving for Ferrari. He formed a close and often mischievous friendship with fellow driver Ayrton Senna during their years as McLaren teammates, renowned throughout the paddock for a series of elaborate practical jokes between the pair. Berger retired from driving in 1997, and went on to become co-owner of the Toro Rosso team in 2006 alongside Red Bull, helping to establish the young driver development programme before selling his share back to Red Bull at the end of the 2008 season. Berger has remained closely involved in motorsport since retiring, and his nephew, Lucas Auer, has continued the family's racing tradition, competing in various international touring car and single-seater categories.
