Gary Hall Jr.

American sprint freestyler who won back-to-back Olympic 50m freestyle titles in 2000 and 2004 despite competing with Type 1 diabetes.

Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on 26 September 1974, Gary Wayne Hall Jr. came from swimming royalty: his father, Gary Hall Sr., competed in three Olympics, and Hall Jr. was destined for the pool from childhood. He swam collegiately at the University of Texas and quickly became one of the world's premier sprint freestylers through the 1990s. Hall made his Olympic debut on home soil at Atlanta 1996, taking four medals including two relay golds. In 1999, he was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, and doctors questioned whether he could continue competing at an elite level. He answered emphatically at the Sydney 2000 Olympics, tying training partner Anthony Ervin for gold in the 50m freestyle in a dead heat, and defended that individual title again at Athens 2004 at age 29, becoming the oldest American male Olympic swimmer since Duke Kahanamoku in 1924 at the time. Over three Olympic Games, Hall won ten medals in total (five gold, three silver, two bronze) and held two relay world records during his career. Known for his brash, showman personality — famously boxing in a robe behind the blocks before races — he became one of the sport's most colourful characters, embracing rivalries such as his showdown with Russia's Alexander Popov. Hall was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 2013, recognised both for his sprinting excellence and his resilience in competing at the top level while managing diabetes. In 2025, after wildfires destroyed his ten Olympic medals, the IOC presented him with replacement medals in a ceremony in Lausanne.
