Francis Zavier Ngannou was born on 5 September 1986 in Batié, Cameroon, and grew up in poverty with little formal education after his parents divorced when he was six. He was sent to live with an aunt and began working in a sand quarry at just ten years old to help support the family, resisting repeated pressure from local gangs to join their ranks by instead channelling his energy into boxing, motivated in part by his desire to escape the negative reputation his own father had earned as a street fighter. Ngannou made a perilous journey from Cameroon to Europe as an undocumented migrant in 2013, spending time homeless in Paris before being discovered training at a local gym and introduced to coach Fernand Lopez, who helped him transition into mixed martial arts. Ngannou, nicknamed "The Predator," won the UFC Heavyweight Championship in March 2021, knocking out Stipe Miocic, and became widely regarded as one of the hardest punchers in the sport's history, holding the UFC's record for the hardest recorded strike.
