Fran Cotton was an England prop and three-time British & Irish Lions tourist who later managed the victorious 1997 Lions tour of South Africa.
Francis Edward Cotton was born on 3 January 1947 in Wigan, Lancashire, England, the son of a talented rugby league player, and attended Newton-le-Willows Grammar School before studying physical education and mathematics at Loughborough University. He captained the North West to a historic first-ever English victory over the All Blacks in 86 attempts, and was chaired off the field by supporters. Cotton made his England debut in 1971 after being selected directly from the pages of the Leicester Mercury, and developed into one of the most versatile props in world rugby, equally effective at tighthead or loosehead. He played club rugby for Coventry and Sale, and helped England win the Grand Slam in 1980, playing loosehead in a forward pack that dominated the championship. Cotton was a cornerstone of three British and Irish Lions tours, and his image, caked in mud during the legendary 1977 tour of New Zealand where the Lions pack was so dominant the All Blacks resorted to three-man scrums, became one of rugby's most iconic photographs. His 1980 Lions tour of South Africa was cut short by a serious viral illness initially feared to be a heart attack. Cotton retired in 1981 due to recurring leg infections, having earned 31 caps for England and captained the side on three occasions. He went on to manage the British and Irish Lions' victorious 1997 tour of South Africa, co-founded the Cotton Traders clothing company, and remained active in rugby administration throughout his post-playing career.
