Felix Gottwald is Austria's most successful Winter Olympian, a Nordic combined specialist who won six Olympic medals across five Games, including three golds.
No Nordic combined athlete has ever won more Olympic medals than Felix Gottwald, whose six — including golds in the individual sprint and team relay at the 2006 Turin Games — set the benchmark for excellence in the discipline. He made his Olympic debut as an 18-year-old at the 1994 Lillehammer Games, and joined the World Cup circuit that same year, competing until 2011 with a brief return in 2009. Gottwald won his first Olympic medals at the 2002 Salt Lake City Games, taking bronze in the sprint, individual, and team events. He reached the peak of his career at the 2006 Turin Olympics, winning gold in both the individual sprint and the team relay, and adding silver in the 15km individual, before defending his team title at the 2010 Vancouver Games. Gottwald's six Olympic medals — three gold, one silver, and two bronze — make him Austria's most successful Winter Olympian and the most decorated Nordic combined athlete in Olympic history. He also won eight medals at the World Championships, including team gold in 2003, and topped the overall World Cup standings in the 2000-01 season with 23 individual World Cup victories across his career. After retiring, Gottwald became an ambassador for the Laureus Sport for Good foundation and the Jane Goodall Institute in Austria, and a ski jumping stadium in Salzburg was renamed in his honour.
