Esteban José Jean-Pierre Ocon-Khelfane was born on 17 September 1996 in Évreux, Normandy, France, to Laurent Ocon, a mechanic who owns a garage in the town, and Sabrina Khelfane, and comes from a working-class family with paternal roots in Málaga, Spain. He began competitive kart racing at nine, and progressed rapidly through junior formulae as part of the Mercedes young driver programme. Ocon won the French Formula Four, FIA Formula 3 European, and GP3 Series championships in successive seasons, and made his Formula One debut in 2016, called up at short notice by Manor Racing after Rio Haryanto was dropped due to funding issues. Ocon moved to Force India in 2017, impressing with consistent points finishes, before a year as Mercedes reserve driver in 2019 preceded his return to the grid with Renault. He delivered the signature moment of his career at the 2021 Hungarian Grand Prix, winning for the Alpine team in what remains his sole Grand Prix victory. Ocon signed with Haas for the 2025 season, reuniting him with fellow Frenchman and former karting rival Oliver Bearman as teammates, and continues to compete as one of the most experienced French drivers on the current grid.
