Dricus du Plessis was born on 14 January 1994 in Welkom, in South Africa's Orange Free State, and began training in judo at just five years old, later expanding into wrestling and kickboxing, becoming his country's first-ever WAKO kickboxing World Champion at 17 with an amateur record of 33-0. Du Plessis, nicknamed "Stillknocks" by his brother after his unbeaten amateur kickboxing career, turned to mixed martial arts and won titles in South Africa's Extreme Fighting Championship at both welterweight and middleweight, along with the Polish KSW welterweight title, before making his UFC debut in 2020. Du Plessis remained undefeated in the UFC through his first eight fights, delivering a signature victory over Robert Whittaker in 2023, and won the UFC Middleweight Championship in January 2024 with a split decision over Sean Strickland, becoming the first South African fighter ever to win a UFC title. Du Plessis defended his title against Strickland and Israel Adesanya before losing the belt to Khamzat Chimaev by decision in August 2025. He rebounded with a win over Kamaru Usman in July 2026, continuing to compete at the top of the middleweight division as one of the most decorated fighters South Africa has produced.
