Dominic Dale, nicknamed 'The Spaceman', is a Welsh former snooker player known for his flamboyant style, who won two ranking titles across a professional career spanning more than three decades.
Dominic Dale, born Christopher Dale on December 29, 1971, in Coventry, England, competes for Wales through his family background. He reached the final of the World Amateur Championship in Bangkok before turning professional in 1992, going on to build a long and distinctive career on the main tour spanning more than three decades. Nicknamed 'The Spaceman' for his flamboyant dress sense, changing hairstyles, and eccentric on-table personality, Dale claimed his first ranking title in sensational fashion at the 1997 Grand Prix, defeating Steve Davis and Jimmy White before beating World Champion John Higgins 9-6 in the final. He won a second ranking title at the 2007 Shanghai Masters, beating Ryan Day 10-6, and later added the non-ranking 2014 Snooker Shoot Out. Despite his ranking-title success, Dale never broke into the world's top 16, peaking at World No. 19 in 1999-2000, and became known as one of the finest players never to reach that milestone. He reached the World Championship quarter-finals twice, in 2000 and 2014, and was part of the Welsh team that won the Nations Cup in 1999. Dale retired from the main tour in 2025 and has since become a regular commentator and pundit for BBC Cymru Wales and TNT Sports.
