Diego Roberto Godín Leal was born on 16 February 1986 in Rosario, Uruguay, to Julio Godín and Iris Leal. As a four-year-old at a family gathering, he nearly drowned attempting to catch fish in a river — an early brush with danger in a childhood otherwise centred on football on the streets of his hometown. Godín progressed through Uruguayan football with Cerro and Nacional before Villarreal signed him in 2007, and his combination of aerial dominance, positioning, and combative defending established him as one of the finest centre-backs of his generation. Atlético Madrid signed him in 2010, and he spent nine years as the defensive cornerstone of Diego Simeone's Atlético, becoming club captain and one of the most iconic figures of the team's rise to sustained European relevance.
