Dennis Seidenberg is a German former NHL defenceman who won the 2011 Stanley Cup with the Boston Bruins, becoming only the second German-born player to claim the trophy.
Dennis Seidenberg's decisive open-ice hit on Martin St. Louis in Game 7 of the 2011 Eastern Conference Final helped swing the series toward Boston, and when the Bruins won the Stanley Cup that June, he became only the second German-born player ever to lift the trophy. He spent three seasons with Adler Mannheim in Germany's top league before the Philadelphia Flyers, who had drafted him 172nd overall in 2001, signed him in 2002. He spent his early North American seasons shuttling between the Flyers and their AHL affiliate, the Philadelphia Phantoms, winning the Calder Cup with the Phantoms during the 2004-05 NHL lockout, before mid-season trades sent him first to the Phoenix Coyotes and later the Carolina Hurricanes. Seidenberg's career took off after he signed with the Florida Panthers as a free agent in 2009, and a trade to the Boston Bruins the following March proved transformative. Paired with captain Zdeno Chara to form one of the league's most dependable shutdown defensive pairings, Seidenberg re-signed with Boston on a four-year, $13 million contract in 2010 and delivered a career year in 2010-11, recording 32 regular-season points before adding 11 more in the playoffs as the Bruins won the Stanley Cup — including a decisive open-ice hit on Tampa Bay's Martin St. Louis in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Final that swung momentum toward Boston. The title made Seidenberg only the second German-born player, after his childhood idol Uwe Krupp, to win the Stanley Cup. Seidenberg remained a fixture of the Bruins' blue line for several more seasons before a serious knee injury in December 2013 sidelined him for the remainder of that campaign. He later played for the New York Islanders before retiring in 2018 after a 15-season NHL career spanning 859 games with six teams, finishing with 44 goals and 207 assists. He represented Germany extensively at the international level throughout his career.
