Dan Issel set Kentucky's all-time career scoring and rebounding records, capped by a senior-year average near 34 points per game.

Daniel Paul Issel was born in Batavia, Illinois in 1948. He attended the University of Kentucky under coach Adolph Rupp and became the school's all-time leading scorer. He averaged 25.8 points and 13.2 rebounds per game across three varsity seasons — the highest scoring averages in Kentucky history. He was a two-time All-American and the SEC Player of the Year. He set the SEC scoring record that stood for decades. His combination of interior scoring, rebounding and surprising agility for his size made him the most productive Kentucky big man since the Rupp dynasty of the 1940s. Kentucky Colonels of the ABA selected him in the 1970 ABA Draft and he won championships in both professional leagues. He averaged 25 or more points per game for seven consecutive professional seasons. His Kentucky career — three years of scoring records and All-American selections — established him as one of the great products of a programme that had been national champions multiple times. He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1993. His legacy at Kentucky remains significant because he performed at the highest statistical level for one of college basketball's most historically demanding programmes.

Issel was a skilled big man who combined exceptional shooting ability with strong rebounding skills. His consistent scoring came from a reliable jump shot and effective post moves, making him difficult to defend both inside and outside. He possessed remarkable durability and consistency, rarely missing games while maintaining high statistical production.

Issel's scoring records and consistent excellence helped establish Kentucky's basketball dominance in the late 1960s and early 1970s under legendary coach Adolph Rupp.
