Colin Jackson won his first Welsh 110m hurdles title at 17, and by 1993 -- at the World Championships in Stuttgart -- he ran a world record that stood for well over a decade, a level of longevity for a single mark that's unusual in an event where technique and training methods keep shifting the ceiling. His silver at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, behind American Roger Kingdom, came before that world record and meant Jackson spent much of his prime being measured against the one major title that kept eluding him at the very top level -- Olympic gold never arrived, even across a career that delivered world and Commonwealth titles in multiples. That gap between sustained global dominance in every other major championship and an Olympic title that never quite landed is a pattern shared by several all-time-great hurdlers, and Jackson's career is often cited as the clearest British example of just how unforgiving a single four-yearly final can be, regardless of how dominant an athlete has been everywhere else.
