Spanish · Zizur Mayor, Spain · Born 28 August 1989Mr. Reliable — Chelsea's versatile captain who played across the entire back line with unwavering consistency for over a decade.
No outfield player in Chelsea's history served the club longer or more consistently than César Azpilicueta, whose decade of Premier League service as captain culminated in the 2021 Champions League title. He made his senior debut for Osasuna before Marseille signed him in 2010, and his performances in France attracted the interest of Chelsea, who signed him in 2012. Azpilicueta went on to have one of the longest and most successful tenures of any player in Chelsea's history, becoming club captain in 2019 and leading the team through a decade of shifting managers and playing styles with remarkable consistency. Versatile enough to play across the back line at right-back, left-back, or centre-back, he became a key tactical asset regardless of Chelsea's system. Over more than a decade at Stamford Bridge, Azpilicueta won two Premier League titles, the FA Cup, two Europa League titles, and, in 2021, the Champions League, cementing his status as one of the club's most decorated and respected captains. He earned dozens of caps for Spain, representing his country at multiple major tournaments across a long international career. Azpilicueta moved to Atlético Madrid in 2024, returning to Spanish football after 12 years in England, before later joining Sevilla, continuing a playing career built on positional versatility and sustained excellence across two of Europe's top leagues.
Versatile defender, Chelsea captain, Premier League and Champions League winner
Chelsea fans nicknamed him 'Dave' because they found 'Azpilicueta' difficult to pronounce, and the name stuck as a term of endearment.
