Bruno Miguel Borges Fernandes was born on 8 September 1994 in Maia, Portugal, and progressed through the youth ranks of Boavista before moving to Italy in 2012 to join Novara, beginning his senior career far from home as a teenager. He went on to play for Udinese and Sampdoria, gradually developing the creative passing range and eye for goal that would define his career, before returning to Portugal to join Sporting CP in 2017. Fernandes became one of the most productive attacking midfielders in Europe during his three seasons at Sporting, combining exceptional goal-scoring output from midfield with elite chance creation, and helped the club end an 18-year wait for a major trophy by winning the 2019 Taça de Portugal.
