Andre De Grasse was born on 10 November 1994 in Scarborough, Ontario, Canada, to a mother who had been a competitive high school sprinter in Trinidad and Tobago before moving to Canada, and a father who emigrated from Barbados as a teenager. He was raised in Markham, Ontario, winning his first race in 2006 at Mother Teresa Catholic School. De Grasse progressed through Coffeyville Community College before transferring to USC, and won a medal in every Olympic and World Championship final he competed in between 2015 and 2023, becoming one of the most consistent sprinters of his generation. De Grasse won Canada's first Olympic gold in track for 25 years at the delayed Tokyo 2020 Games, taking the 200m title in a Canadian record of 19.62 seconds, the country's first 200m gold in 93 years. De Grasse has continued to compete at the top level of international sprinting, and was appointed a member of the Order of Canada and the Order of Ontario in recognition of his achievements, remaining one of the most decorated Canadian track athletes in history.
