Malaysia's greatest athlete — three Olympic silver medals and the highest world ranking in Malaysian sport.
Lee Chong Wei was born in Baling, Kedah, Malaysia in 1982. He was ranked world number one for 349 weeks — the most in the history of the BWF rankings. He won three Olympic silver medals — each time losing the final to Lin Dan (2008, 2012) or Chen Long (2016). He was banned for eight months in 2015 following a positive test for a banned substance — the result generating enormous controversy in Malaysia where he is the country's most popular athlete. He retired in 2019 after being diagnosed with nose cancer. He is Malaysia's most beloved sports figure and the person who transformed badminton into a mainstream Malaysian sport.
