Two Olympic gold medals — the most glamorous and commercially successful figure skater of the Cold War era.
Katarina Witt was born in Karl-Marx-Stadt, East Germany in 1965. She won two Olympic gold medals (1984 and 1988) and four World Championships. Her performances — combining technical excellence with theatrical presentation — made her the most watched figure skater of her era and a global celebrity at a time when East Germany produced very few internationally recognisable figures. She posed for Playboy in 1998. She later appeared in various entertainment roles. She is the most celebrated East German athlete in any sport and one of the most decorated figure skaters in the Olympic movement's history.
