86 World Cup wins — the most by any male alpine skier in history.
Ingemar Stenmark was born in Tärnaby, Sweden in 1956. He won 86 World Cup races — the most by any male alpine skier. He won two Olympic gold medals at Lake Placid 1980. He was the most technically precise slalom and giant slalom skier the sport has produced — his edge control and line-finding on icy courses was unprecedented. He won the World Cup overall title three times. He was later banned from Olympic competition for two years for accepting commercial income — a ruling typical of the Amateur era's treatment of athletes. He remains the gold standard in technical skiing.
