Gao Ling was born in Hubei, China in 1979. She won four Olympic medals across Athens 2000 and Beijing 2004 — two gold medals (mixed doubles and women's doubles in 2000, mixed doubles in 2004 and women's doubles silver in 2004) — making her the most decorated female badminton player in Olympic history. She won multiple World Championship titles and held the World No.1 ranking for extended periods. Her partnership with Zhang Jun in mixed doubles was considered one of the finest ever seen, combining her exceptional net play with his court coverage. She retired after the Beijing Games, having represented China across a decade of international competition.
