SMU legend and three-time All-American — the most decorated college player of the late 1940s.
Ewell Doak Walker Jr. was born in Dallas, Texas in 1927. He attended Southern Methodist University and became the most celebrated college football player of the late 1940s. He won the Heisman Trophy in 1948, the Maxwell Award and was a three-time All-American. He led SMU to the Southwest Conference championship twice. He was considered the complete football player of his era — he could run, pass, kick and play defence with equal effectiveness. He scored 288 total points across his SMU career. Detroit Lions selected him in the first round of the 1950 NFL Draft and he won two NFL championships with Detroit (1952, 1953) and was named to five Pro Bowls. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1959 and the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1986. The Doak Walker Award — given annually to the nation's best college running back — is named in his honour. His SMU career is the most decorated in the programme's history and helped establish the Southwest Conference as a national power.
