The architect of West Indies dominance — captain of the two most powerful teams in cricket history.
Clive Hubert Lloyd was born in Georgetown, Guyana in 1944. He captained the West Indies to back-to-back World Cup victories in 1975 and 1979. As captain from 1974 to 1985 he developed the strategy of deploying four-pronged pace attacks — Roberts, Holding, Garner, Croft, Marshall — that made the West Indies the most feared team in Test cricket for 15 years. He played 110 Tests and scored 7,515 runs. He won 36 Tests as captain and lost only 12. He played county cricket for Lancashire for years. He managed the West Indies team after his playing career and was a respected figure in international cricket administration.
