Christian Mathias Cullen was born on 12 February 1976 in Paraparaumu, New Zealand, and grew up in the nearby town of Paekākāriki, the youngest of three children with an elder twin brother, Shane. Of Irish, Samoan, Māori, and German ancestry, Cullen attended Kāpiti College and was selected for the New Zealand secondary schools team in both 1993 and 1994, showing early signs of extraordinary natural talent. Cullen made his provincial debut for Manawatu in 1995, scoring 70 points from just 12 tries, two conversions, and two penalty goals, and was selected for the New Zealand sevens squad before earning a remarkably rapid call-up to the All Blacks. Renowned for his blistering acceleration, elusive footwork, and try-scoring instinct from full-back, he quickly became one of the most feared attacking players in world rugby, earning the nickname "The Paekakariki Express."
