Snowboarding's golden girl — two consecutive Olympic halfpipe gold medals and the sport's most celebrated teenager.
Chloe Kim was born in Long Beach, California in 2000 to South Korean immigrant parents. Her father Jong Jin Kim — who worked multiple jobs including in a grocery store — committed entirely to developing her snowboarding career, following her to competitions and eventually giving up his job. She was the first snowboarder to land back-to-back 1080s in competition. She qualified for the 2014 Sochi Olympics at 13 but was too young to compete. She won her first Olympic gold at Pyeongchang 2018 at 17 — posting a score of 98.25 with back-to-back 1080s on her final run, having already secured gold, in a display of competitive excellence that was entirely unnecessary but completely characteristic. She took a year off from competition in 2019 — attending Princeton University and working on her mental health. She won her second Olympic gold at Beijing 2022. She posted a tweet mid-competition at Pyeongchang saying she was hungry for a churro — generating one of the most widely shared social media posts in Olympic history. She is the most decorated female snowboarder in Olympic history.
