Bjørn Dæhlie was born in Elverum, Norway in 1967. He won eight Olympic gold medals and four silver medals across 1992, 1994 and 1998 — the most by any Winter Olympian. He won 17 World Championship titles. His dominance of cross-country skiing across the 1990s was complete — he won 29 Olympic and World Championship medals combined. He is the most decorated Winter Olympian in history. He retired in 1999 after a series of back injuries. He was voted the Norwegian athlete of the 20th century.
