Georgetown's defensive anchor — followed Patrick Ewing as the Hoyas' elite center.
Alonzo Mourning was born in Chesapeake, Virginia in 1970. He attended Georgetown University under coach John Thompson — following in the footsteps of Patrick Ewing as the programme's dominant center. He was a two-time All-American and the Big East Player of the Year. He was named the Big East Defensive Player of the Year three consecutive times. He averaged 16.7 points and 8.5 rebounds per game across four seasons. His blocks per game average was consistently among the nation's highest. He followed the Ewing tradition of Georgetown producing elite interior defenders who could also score efficiently in the post. Charlotte Hornets selected him second overall in the 1992 NBA Draft. His professional career produced two Defensive Player of the Year awards, seven All-Star appearances and an NBA championship with the Miami Heat in 2006 — after overcoming a kidney transplant in 2003. His Georgetown career established him as the most complete defensive center produced by the programme since Ewing and is the foundation of a professional legacy that overcame enormous medical obstacles.
